Presidential Pardons Office (USPardon.Attorney@usdoj.gov)
U.S. Department of Justice
Washington, D.C.
Subject: Request for Presidential Pardon for Chhun Yasith
Dear Presidential Pardons Office:
One of the Presidential pardons that deserves special and urgent consideration by President Biden and your Office, prior to the end of President Biden’s term in office is the case of Chhun Yasith, a Cambodian American who is in prison for attempting to organize the overthrow of the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia. We understand that citizens and residents of the U.S. should not be engaged in planning or carrying out acts of a political nature against foreign governments. But the circumstances are very special in this case that bring the value and necessity of the granting of a Presidential pardon or clemency into play.
The United States government has made it very clear that they do not support the Hun Sen regime, and their 40 plus years of massive and extremely harsh human rights abuses. Cambodia had only one free and fair election in 1993 under UNTAC control, after that Hun Sen’s Coup d’état killed thousands of opposition party members and supporters and abolished opposition parties.
Under these circumstances, keeping Chhun in prison for supporting the position of the U.S. regarding Hun Sen makes no sense. We Cambodia Americans hope you will use the Presidential pardoning power accordingly.
Respectfully,
Saunora Prom, Representative in the United States
